Hubber Legal

Our team

We are a firm of three. You will deal directly with the lawyer running your matter.

Matthew Hubber, Principal Lawyer at Hubber Legal

Matthew Hubber

Principal Lawyer, Barrister & Solicitor

Matt Hubber is the Principal of Hubber Legal and one of the Northern Territory's most experienced criminal defence lawyers.

He began his career in 2008 at the Northern Territory Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before moving to criminal defence. Having built prosecution cases himself, he knows how they are investigated, assembled and presented, and where they are weakest.

Matt appears regularly in the Local Court and the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. He is currently instructed in some of the largest criminal prosecutions in the Territory, including complex Commonwealth fraud and money laundering matters.

His experience includes

  • Drug possession, supply and trafficking
  • Murder, manslaughter and other homicide offences
  • Serious assaults and offences causing serious harm
  • Sexual offences
  • Dangerous driving and motor vehicle offences causing death
  • Fraud, money laundering and Commonwealth prosecutions
  • Bail applications
  • Criminal property forfeiture proceedings
  • Appeals and sentencing
  • Coronial inquests

Matt's approach is direct and practical. He will tell you what he thinks, not what you want to hear, and he will explain it in language you can actually use.

Outside the office Matt is a mad-keen fisherman, has served as a member of the Darwin AFL Tribunal, has volunteered at the Darwin Community Legal Service, and competes in triathlon and mountain biking around the Top End.

Eve Weir, Barrister and Solicitor at Hubber Legal

Eve Weir

Barrister & Solicitor

Eve Weir practises exclusively in criminal law and appears for clients in both the Local Court and the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory.

Eve joined Hubber Legal in March 2023 while completing her legal studies and has been an important member of the firm ever since.

Before moving to Darwin, Eve studied Arts and Law in Adelaide, including French as her Arts major. She later completed her Bachelor of Laws at Charles Darwin University and undertook her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice through the College of Law. Eve was admitted to legal practice in 2025.

Eve is thorough and approachable, and takes particular care to make sure clients understand what is happening at each stage of their matter, something that matters more than most people expect when you are in a system you have never dealt with before.

Gerard Richardson, Barrister and Solicitor at Hubber Legal, in the firm's Darwin office

Gerard Richardson

Barrister & Solicitor

Gerard Richardson is a criminal defence lawyer with experience across assault, property, drug and driving offences, and in matters involving the exercise of statutory powers by public authorities.

He appears in contested hearings, bail applications and sentencing proceedings, and instructs in complex Supreme Court matters. He has also appeared in proceedings before statutory investigative bodies with coercive information-gathering powers.

Gerard has a particular interest in police powers and how they intersect with individual rights and liberties.

Before coming to law, he spent his career as a consultant, media adviser and speechwriter to corporate and political leaders across Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Charles Darwin University, a Bachelor of Communications from Deakin University, and a Master of Public Policy and Management from the University of Melbourne.
